WELV President, 2016-17
Hello to my WELV friends and family,
Welcome to the 2016-17 school year! I hope you have had a fantastic summer and had some time to recharge your batteries. I know that we often work very hard to keep everyone else in gear and forget to recharge our own energies. If you haven’t done so yet, please find some time to do that SOON!
As some of you know, I made a transition this summer from Charlottesville City Schools to Strayer University. It has been an exciting change and while I miss my Charlottesville family every day, I am enjoying the challenge of a new educational experience. I am also figuring out working from home. I used to think that if I was home more, my house would be cleaner. I have learned that may not be true and that I actually have to do something to make that happen.
As we start this year, I want you to think of the abilities and talents you have and I know they are many! Use them wisely but not only to help others grow but to use them as the springboard to add to your own talents. It is easy to think you can’t do any better or that you are at the top of your game. Be brave and try something new. If you are a teacher and know you are a great teacher, that is wonderful. However, if you think you might have other administrative/leadership skills, go for it! Be a role model to others. WELV has many members who are in higher levels of educational leadership. This could be true for you, too. Use those skills and experiences to try new adventures or use different avenues to achieve your goals.
Lastly, many of you knew or had been in professional learning activities with Dr. Sarah Armstrong. Not many years ago, she provided a session at the WELV conference. Sarah, unfortunately, passed away very unexpectedly in late August. Her experience and knowledge with several school divisions and colleges/universities will be greatly missed as well as her bright smile.
Have a great 2016-17 and stay in touch with WELV! You will be glad you did!
